Prabal Gurung NYFW Ready To Wear

The show began with the sombre sound of 30 monks, clad in vibrant burnt orange with their hands held in prayer. An unusual reverent start to a typical bustling NYFW show, however this wasn't just any show, this was the start of Prabal Gurungs show the Kathmandu, Napal raised fashion designer who this past year, followin the Nepal earthquake crisis used his social media platform to spread awareness and raise over 1 million for the people of Napal. Prabal remarked, that he is grateful to the fashion industry which granted him the platform to change so many lives.

Against this backdrop perhaps the monks were perfectly placed, the juxtaposition of prayer and fashion a reminder of how fashion and the people can united to change the lives of many.

Themes:

Burnt Orange:
Nepal was a great theme through out the collection evidenced through burnt orange that featured more than a few times: a strong yet beautiful colour perhaps alluding to the fierce resilience of people to overcome tragedy.

Movement: If burnt orange symbolises strength, the light airy fabric alludes to the delicacy of humanity. Movement is beautiful for SS.

My favourite pieces:

This bronze glitter and low v-neck dress was a show stopper for me. I also love the ethic models. It is great to see some colour on this runway.

Stunning open shoulder design and silk fabric over lay is a delicate yet bold look for summer. The shoes make the over all look cool and urban

The jagged hem and openings are a SS16 trend which can also be seen during the NYFW opening show.

  Elegant. Simple. Stunning.

Oscar De La Renta NYFW- Galliano Speculation

Ooh I hear from a little birdie ( ok not just one, its been a hot topic) that John Galliano has set up camp at Oscar de la Renta. The foot in mouth designer has been on the untouchable list since dismissal at Dior, with only a few bold enough to make press ' eye contact'. Well today the Oscar De La Renta  unvailed his AW13 collection, the first since getting in bed with Galliano- leaving the fashion tweeters to speculate as to how much influence he had on the collection ( great PR tactic). Well I dont know about you but the accentuation of the the female form and the style of these jackets look suspiciously Dior New Look to me. Well who ever has had their finger in this design pot I like it. Whats your verdict?

My 2 cents?

The accentuated and defined waists may be very Galliano Dior, but the experimentation and expression through fabrics is all Oscar De La Renta- As for the drama- I would say thats the both of them ;)

New Yorks Finest

New York really brought it to the table, hot , steamy and delicious like mommas pie. The theme for this fashion week seems to be celebrating the strength of femininity. Fur made a strong appearance, but not in a 'slap dash' manner, rather it was used thoughtfully to reinforce the concept of femininity. Fur itself is a perfect representation of the elements of a strong woman- what can seem intimidating in presence in reality translates into something that is in reality soft to the touch, beautiful, unique by nature and protecting by function. Now, I don't know if the designers considered all of this when choosing fur ( it is after all Autumn winter) but it was defiantly the right choice for designers Alexander Wang, Donna Karan and Chaudo Ralph Rucci who used fur to accent strong silhouettes.  My personal favourites were Alexander Wang , Donna Karan & Reem Acra who redefined the boundaries femininity, upholding its strength whilst maintaining the trademark of a woman subtle sexuality, routed in confidence and strength.

Alexander Wang

Wang did what we know and love him for, taking geometric and architectural design and making it feminine and beautiful. His pieces communicated strength without compromising desirability. You could imagine a bad ass boss lady wearing the pieces on crowded wall street and standing out equally for strength as femininity.

Donna Karan

Donna Karan shines as she confidently works from a full creative melody of fabrics to create looks that  cleverly show the feminine silhouette ,  not from an over sexual male objective- Donna craftily manages to celebrate the female form from a position of empowerment through beauty.

Reem Acra

Lebanese designer Reem Acra is mainly known for her bridal wear, however there was nothing submissive about this collection. Bold and fiercely beautiful her pieces were made for an individual independent beautiful yet strong woman not unlike Reem herself. The collection juxtaposes embellishment and luxury whilst still maintaining attitude. I love it!
